Alteration and Addition to an Existing House
Additional space was required for an existing four bedroom home in Wellington's leafy suburb of Karori - a charming neighbourhood just 4km's from the city centre. Previously out of date spaces were given a modern upgrade - and dark rooms redesigned and opened up to improve flow and the quality of living for this young family. The finished design effortlessly connects new spaces with existing, while maintaining the character of the original 1950s home.
Skylights and north facing windows positioned on the new first floor above the stairwell and landing, flood both floors with natural light and open up the previously dim hallway. The new first floor includes a bathroom, single bedroom and master retreat with spacious walk-in wardrobe. The generous family bathroom features a double basin vanity, large tiled shower and freestanding bath perfectly centred under the window.
A new modern kitchen and cosy family room have been added to the ground floor, increasing space and improving function for the family of five. Timber bi-fold doors extend the new family room out to the existing deck and large lawn, maximising indoor-outdoor flow. This transforms the previously dated kitchen and dark master bedroom, bringing daylight and the view of mature trees indoors from both ends of the newly renovated space.
The addition is finished with weatherboard cladding to match the original home and neighbouring dwellings. The apex of the new roof and north facing feature window both follow the same angle as the existing roof line. This graceful new addition sits perfectly as a modernised extension of the original home - honouring its character and charm in every detail.
